Amanda and I have been itching to tour again, since our first one last summer. Over the winter, a few things happened though. First, her Rocky Mountain Fusion bicycle was stolen, and replaced by a Kona Cindercone. I also bought a Kona Hoss Dee-Lux — finally we had disc brakes! Also, we bought a B.o.B. trailer so that we wouldn’t have to load up all of those tiny panniers. And finally we had a Garmin GPS unit that we could use to accurately track our milage and elevation. We would have gone touring earlier in the year I think if not for Amanda’s marathon training. Having completed her first marathon, she was ready to get back into some serious riding. I have a very good friend of mine who had moved up to Powell River and so we decided to go ride and see him. Here’s how we broke down the May long weekend to fit in our trip.We had purchased a copy of “Cycling the Pacific Coast” from MEC and were surprised to see that the Pacific Tour actually started by riding from Vancouver to Powell River. We decided to just follow the book for the most part, although Amanda did find some “helpful” internet sites for various parts of the tour.Day 1 – Catch the 4:45pm ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Gibsons, ride 10km to Roberts Creek campground and stay there for the night.
Day 2 – Wake up bright and early and ride the 70km to Sechelt and then make our way to Powell River. Eat, drink, be merry.
Day 3 – Catch a ferry across to Vancouver Island and find a campground to spend the night.
Day 4 – Ride bicycles 100km to Nanaimo for trip back to Horseshoe Bay.
Here’s how it really went down.
