Friendly Faces
Skylie: The waitress at dinner at the Offshore Seafood Restaurant. Everyone was giving me grief for giving her the gears while ordering dessert first, and an odd cocktail, but Skylie really opened up to us. She shared her dreams of becoming a more experienced journalist. She recounting her history to us when she suddenly realized that she was forgetting why she originally wanted to be a journalist. Sometimes being stuck in the day-to-day rigamarole makes it easy to forget who we want to be, and I’m happy we could help remind Skylie. Best wishes!
Today’s Highlights
Andrew writes: SUP’ing with Amanda at Long Beach. I’m about 1 day more experienced than her, but she is just such a natural at any athletic endeavour. She was having a great time in the waves, and I really enjoyed watching her shining smile.
Today’s Lowlights
Andrew writes: At dinner tonight, I acknowledged how much my friendship with Megan and Paul was important to me. We’ve been friends for almost as long as Amanda and I have been together. We’ve celebrated New Years almost every year, and there has been at least one adult-only vacation every year also. I’ll really miss these guys.
Andrew writes…
We woke up early because of some crows outside our tent. They kept caw’ing and caw’ing, for what seemed like forever. Finally Amanda ducked out for a pee, and to see what the ruckus was about. It turns out that we had left some garbage outside last night and the crows were going to town on it. Whoops.
We decided to wake up, and I eagerly launched into “chef mode”, preparing sweet basil and cheese infused scrambled eggs, a potato/vegetable/ham/cheese medley, and bacon. Paul was a great helper in getting breakfast ready for everyone too. Meanwhile, the girls had gone to the marina to get the boat so that there could be some fishing today.
Amanda and I decided to spend some time together instead, so we squeezed into some wetsuits and launched ourselves at the waves of Long Beach again. It was just as foggy as yesterday, if not more, but splashing around with Amanda for 3-hours is as good as a sunny day anywhere. I feel like I am almost at the point now where I can catch a wave standing up on the SUP. I hope to get more practice in this winter in Mexico.
Amanda and Megan went for a massage in the afternoon, and Paul took the kids up to the park for playtime and ice cream. I managed to tether Amanda’s iPhone internet connection to the Macbook so that I could upload some blog posts and photos. Time alone like that is really nice. The whole weekend just seems to have a great balanced feel to it.
Once the girls came back, we headed out to a local restaurant, the Offshore Seafood Restaurant, for dinner. The service left a little to be desired by western standards, just slow really, maybe they forgot to make our appetizer. We weren’t sure, but we did witness a bit of a fight between our server and the chef. Shortly after our apply arrived. The food was amazing though! Amanda and I each had the seafood pad thai. Fine cuisine like this will be in short supply over the next few months, and Amanda skipped dessert for another chance to enjoy the crab dip. Since I start every dinner with dessert it’s only fitting I guess. We’re a match made in heaven.
More s’mores, and campfire talk, and cards when we got back, and we all sat under the bright night sky, absolutely chock-full of stars. What a wonderful way to end the evening; with friends.
