Facts about Whitehorse
There are over 700 kilometers of mountain biking trails within the city of Whitehorse. In summer you can take the chairlift up Mount Sima, the local ski hill, and bike back down.
Friendly Faces
Patricia: Patricia was the hostess at the YVR White Spot. She is originally from Chile, and LOVES to bicycle. She has done some touring in South America, and her dream is to cycle all around Brazil. Her smile was infectious, and it was such a great way to start off our morning!
Today’s Highlights
Amanda writes:Arriving in Whitehorse to Auntie Janet being incredibly excited to see us. She is such an amazing host introducing us to the town. Her home is wonderful filled with love and laughter. Having dinner with the family was so great. They are so easy to be around and then we watched the amazing race that was filmed right in their home town of Whitehorse. It was so wonderful watch it with their insight into the local heritage and see how funny they thought it was when the competitors went the wrong way. Thank goodness that Andrew and I didn’t apply to be on the show because it would have been a huge embarrassment for family to go the wrong way ;).
Today’s Lowlights
Amanda writes:Realizing at the end of the day that I lost a few belongings already. Nothing tragic but mostly annoying. I had a fun texting conversation with my sister Angela as she was searching her place for the items I can’t seem to locate. I left my soap in her bathtub and can’t seem to find a bag of delicates. It made for some fun with Auntie Janet offering to share some of hers.
Update: Missing “delicates” located in a box in Inuvik. Whoops!
What happened…
Amanda writes: Andrew has been blogging quite a bit during our trip to Tofino. I decided to just enjoy the trip. I’m not suggesting Andrew wasn’t enjoying the trip with his blogging, we just do things a bit differently. Writing seems to be therapeutic for Andrew and I expect the same but need it to come naturally. I’ve had many thoughts over the weekend but had no desire to put pen to paper. I’ll sum it up by saying I’m so relaxed and ready for this. As I write this we are on a plane flying over Northern British Columbia…
The day started with an alarm clock and our brother-in-law Glenn offering to drive us to the airport. It was such a great way to start; in the comfort of a family home. Glenn and my sister Angela have always opened their home to us and it was such a comfortable way to ease into our trip. We were able to do laundry, enjoy some time with him and our nephews. I set the alarm early as Glenn had to drive us before his conference call. I set the alarm for 7am and had a shower and then woke Andrew at 7:15 after finding him snuggling with our nieces stuffed animals. Then we finished up getting ready and I met him downstairs at which time he informed me I accidentally woke us up at 5:30 instead of 7:00. Better to be early than late?
After being dropped off we had a nice breakfast under the pre tense the budget doesn’t start until tomorrow (the first official day of riding).
Off to the airport and still I am so excited and not afraid yet. I’m excited that the last 24 hours have continued to be filled with love and support from family. Both of my sisters called last night along with my Mom. They’re happy for me and sad all at the same time and it fills me with so much love I feel like I can conquer anything! And the icing on the cake is we are on our way to Whitehorse where more family will welcome up with smiles and hugs. Andrew’s Aunt and cousins are super excited to be seeing us and the feeling is mutual. Ooh! We just flew over a big lake with floating ice chunks. And now we just flew over the huge fires. At first they looked like funny looking clouds. So devastating. Looking so forward to landing and seeing family.
Andrew writes: I’ll pick up where Amanda left off. My ribs are sore. So many hugs from my Aunt and Cousins (Vanessa and Naomi) today. It feels pretty cool to be so-loved by people we see only every so often. And then I look on my camera and there are hardly any pictures. I guess we were too busy enjoying Aunty Janet’s fine northern hospitality. Towels, toothbrushes, home-cooking, granny-panties, there are no lengths to which my Aunt will go to, in order to ensure that we are well-fed, well-rested and well-prepared for our trip. Hopefully we will see her again when we pass through Whitehorse in a few weeks.
