Friendly Faces
Gabriel and Mary: Another pair of wonderful Casa owners. Gabriel is 71, and while he is Cuban born, he spent a few years living in the US as a child where he learned English. He is also somewhat well-travelled, as he went to Eastern Europe several times when he was younger for work. This made him easy to talk to since he spoke really good English. His wife, Mary, is such a hard-worker, and extremely kind. We really enjoy their company and hope that we can visit with them again on our way back to Cayo Coco.

What happened…

This is my kinda place. Cheap rent, cheap food options, nice beach. It’s so nice that I’m able to gloss over the crowded beach full of drunk Cubans partying up their weekend…and the discotheque next door which pumps and thumps until the wee-hours. Actually the craziness on the beach is really kind of cool. There are thousands of people here this weekend..and it only gets busier as the summer grows longer. The proximity to La Habana (30km) means that people drive out to Guanabo to spend the day, and then just drive home after. When I originally came to Cuba, we spent the first few days in Cayo Coco, and I thought that it was weird how almost no one was in the water. Not so here, where everyone has their bottle of rum in one hand, and their cigarette in the other, trying hard to avoid getting splashed by some of the higher waves.
There wasn’t any wind, or waves to speak of for us though, not like there was yesterday when we spent until sunset playing in the water. The weather just didn’t add-up, so instead we just took it easy in the shade, with our own bottle of rum, and some playing cards. It’s hard to think of today as a “rest” day, since we just took a day off the other day in Playa Larga, but who cares, we’re having a great time! I like this relaxed pace that we’ve adopted, it’s very Cuban, very “tranquillo”.
